Therapeutic Massage

Swedish Massage

Swedish Massage is known for its long, gliding strokes, applied with moderate pressure and with lotion or oil to enhance the soothing effect. “Classic” Swedish massage addresses the body as a whole rather than focusing on any single muscle group. While a full-body Swedish massage is a profoundly relaxing experience, many clients request some focus on specific “trouble spots” as well.

Rehabilitative Massage

Rehabilitative massage is focused on reducing pain and supporting healing from an accidental, repetitive stress, or overuse injury. In addition to range of motion assessment and passive stretching, a rehabilitative massage usually includes Deep Tissue Massage and Trigger Point Therapy. My approach to rehabilitative massage always includes Swedish-style warm-up strokes to bring the body/mind into a relaxed state conducive to healing, and to warm up any area that requires deeper and more specific work.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage: Many of the same movements and techniques as Swedish, but with much more pressure and depth in order to access and relax the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue.

Trigger Point Therapy

Trigger point therapy: A “trigger point” is a bundle of muscle fibers that are taut and very tender. Trigger point therapy involves pressing into the trigger point to the point of release, often alternating with short, deep strokes over the spot, followed by passive stretch of the muscle. I also believe in working slowly to give the body time to adjust and to “invite me in,” allowing me to work more deeply in the muscle tissue with less resistance.

Heated Stone Massage

Heated stone massage is a nurturing, soothing, and exceptionally therapeutic experience. Heated basalt stones, noted for their ability to retain heat, are the hallmarks of this therapy. In a full-body treatment, I place heated stones on areas of stored tension, and continue massaging the body with the warm, oiled stones, using varying pressure for different effects. I am honored to work with stones which have been shaped over thousands of years by the waters of Lake Superior and of the Pacific Ocean.
